What is historical fiction?

It has been asked of me, for the purpose of this challenge, what do I consider historical fiction? Lots of people have different definitions and ideas of what really Christian Historical Fiction is. What I am going to share with you is my opinion. It is wide open.

From Biblical fiction to the Dark Ages and then onto Recent Historical Fiction and I even include Amish fiction. Within the pages of Old West, Prairie, and Frontier novels to the streets of nineteenth century Boston, New York and Scotland. In the far reaches of the globe and even the forest of Wales. To the islands of the Keys and the Pirate filled seas. In the Regency manors and Vicarage halls. Scottish moors and Irish castles. African tribes and Chinese masters. Everywhere that is past is qualifying to me.

Questions? Arguments? *wink*

  1. I read somewhere that historical fiction is a story that takes place 50 years or more before the time the book was written.

I tend to consider anything that takes place before I was born to be historical fiction (I'm 31), but that's just my take on it. ;-)

  2. I think that's right, but then there is the genre of "recent historical inspirational fiction" from authors such as Elizabeth Musser and Renee Riva including time lines of the 80s and so on... It's a take it or leave it up to you type of thing.

For my preference I'm beyond the 1920s. Personally..
